Just six months after the debut of the GLC EQ electric SUV, Mercedes-Benz has swiftly introduced the long-wheelbase GLC 350 L variant.
This bespoke version is tailored to cater to the discerning tastes of Chinese customers, where rear-seat space and performance metrics are paramount considerations.
The most striking feature of the GLC 350 L is its extended wheelbase, measuring 3,027 mm—a 55 mm increase over the standard international model. While this may seem modest on paper, it translates to a transformative improvement in rear cabin space. The significantly enhanced legroom is a major draw for customers who prioritize a chauffeured experience in the back seat, a cultural preference prevalent in this populous market.
Visually, the GLC 350 L retains the sleek, modern design language of the European GLC EQ. The extended rear doors and a subtle “L” badge on the tail distinguish this variant. However, the large illuminated grille, a signature of Mercedes’ electric lineup, continues to spark divided opinions among enthusiasts regarding its aesthetic appeal.
Powering the GLC 350 L are two electric motors: a 219 hp front motor and a 402 hp rear motor. While the combined output remains undisclosed, experts anticipate it to surpass the 483 hp of the European GLC 400 EQ, delivering exceptional acceleration and performance.
Although official specifications for the Chinese variant are pending, it is likely to retain the 94 kWh lithium-ion battery from the international model. Under the WLTP cycle, this would enable a maximum range of 713 km on a single charge. However, under China’s CLTC standard, the GLC 350 L is expected to exceed 800 km, setting a formidable benchmark in its segment.
The launch of the GLC 350 L is a critical move for Mercedes-Benz in the world’s largest electric vehicle market. Amid a 7% sales decline in 2024 due to rising competition from domestic Chinese brands, this model is positioned as a strategic countermeasure. The GLC 350 L not only addresses growth objectives but also reinforces Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to maintaining its prestige and leadership in the face of intense competition from local electric vehicle manufacturers.
