At the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, Mazda unveiled a game-changer for outdoor enthusiasts: the CX-5 with fully foldable rear seats.
This innovative design creates a spacious flat floor, allowing a 6-foot individual to stretch out comfortably without any constraints.
To achieve this, Mazda extended the CX-5’s overall length by 115mm, reaching 4,690mm. The additional space is dedicated to the rear area, including the cargo hold and legroom for passengers. The boxier design not only increases length but also provides ample headroom and shoulder space, surpassing its predecessor.
A clever design feature is the reversible rear headrests, which double as comfortable pillows during rest stops. Combined with the large panoramic sunroof and strategically placed pillars, occupants can enjoy a clear view of the night sky, transforming the urban SUV into a mobile bedroom for camping-free adventures.
While embracing a practical and outdoor-focused approach, the new Mazda CX-5 retains its stylish essence with bold design changes. Mazda has discontinued the diesel engine option and streamlined the interior by minimizing physical buttons, opting for a modern digital interface.
However, off-road enthusiasts might be disappointed to learn that Mazda has no plans to revive the Field Journey variant. Instead, the brand focuses on making the standard model a versatile choice, suitable for both urban elegance and overnight travel experiences.
