Regardless of the fact that many BMW enthusiasts have been longing for a complete BMW M7 model, the Bavarian automaker still hasn’t seen enough reason to provide their flagship sedan with a high-performance variant with comprehensive upgrades from M GmbH. However, with a 0-60 mph acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds, 650 horsepower and a maximum torque of 1,100 Nm, in theory, the all-new i7 M70 xDrive could be considered a true M car, folks.
The i7 M70 xDrive, despite its weight of up to 2,689 kg, is the fastest and most powerful BMW in the fully electric range. In fact, it’s not only the fastest 7-Series variant offered, surpassing the M760e xDrive’s blistering 0-60 mph time by an additional 0.8 seconds, but it’s also faster than the newly introduced BMW XM Label Red.
To achieve such power, the BMW i7 M70 is equipped with a powerful electric drivetrain. The front electric motor generates 255 horsepower like the i7 xDrive60, but the rear motor has been increased by over 50% – from 308 horsepower to a maximum output of 483 horsepower. This rear motor not only contributes to the astonishing performance figures but is also being hailed as the most powerful electric motor ever produced by BMW.
In Sport Mode, you get a combination of power and torque at 1,014 Nm, but it can reach up to 1,100 Nm when the Launch Control feature is activated.
The i7 M70 utilizes the same 101.7 kWh battery pack as the i7 xDrive60. However, preliminary tests conducted by BMW indicate that the range of the vehicle will be approximately 472 km.
For those still concerned about the i7 M70’s range, users can activate the new “Max Range” mode to optimize the vehicle’s range. With the DC fast charger, BMW claims that users can charge from 10% to 80% in just 34 minutes.
In addition to the drivetrain upgrades, the BMW i7 M70 also receives enhancements to the M chassis and suspension system. Furthermore, the body rigidity has been reinforced. Meanwhile, advanced technological elements of the vehicle, including Rear-Wheel Steering and Active Stability Control, remain available.
The braking system has also been upgraded, with M-Sport blue brake calipers, high-performance tires making their first appearance as an option on the i7, but only when the user switches to the smaller 20-inch wheels instead of the lighter M 21-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of exterior design, in addition to characteristic design elements such as the large grille and powerful air intakes, BMW also offers the optional addition of the M Performance Professional package, which adds features such as black M rear spoiler, a black accent strip between the taillights.
Meanwhile, the standard i7 M70 xDrive is equipped with M side skirts, M logo, M Shadowline gloss black trim or black mirror caps.
Other notable additions include the updated two-tone paint options with over 100 special BMW Individual colors. Additionally, there’s the new 8.5 operating system by BMW.
The BMW i7 M70 xDrive will be available at the brand’s dealerships in the US in the second half of 2023 and will be produced in Germany. The pricing for the vehicle has yet to be revealed, but it will surely be the most expensive model in the 2024 7-Series lineup.
