At the Japan Mobility Show 2023 exhibition held in Japan, Lexus has officially unveiled a new all-electric concept car called the LF-ZC.
The LF-ZC Concept is positioned in the mid-sized sedan segment, with dimensions similar to the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3. The car has a length x width x height of 4,750 x 1,880 x 1,390 mm, and a wheelbase length of 2,890mm.
LF-ZC Concept is developed based on a new dedicated electric vehicle platform for Lexus. The chassis will consist of three main modules (front – center – rear) instead of being assembled from hundreds of individual metal pieces as usual. This improvement not only provides a solid structure for the chassis but also maximizes cost savings.
The new chassis structure makes the car lighter, increasing its operating range on a single charge.
According to the plan, the commercial version of the Lexus LF-ZC Concept will be produced on a modern “self-driving assembly line”, where the cars are assembled and can automatically transition to the next stage. This allows the self-driving car to have only the battery, motor, tires, and wireless terminal components at the front, center, and rear respectively.
Lexus LF-ZC Concept has a design language called Provocative Simplicity, which is minimalistic yet still contemporary. Lexus claims that the LF-ZC Concept has a drag coefficient of 0.2, making it one of the best aerodynamically designed cars currently.
The exterior design of the LF-ZC Concept combines elements of sedans and estates, somewhat similar to the Kia EV6 but lower and without any attributes of traditional crossovers. The car has a low hood and a sleek rear that follows the coupe style.
The front of the car stands out with its hook-shaped LED headlights and black-triangle front corners as accents. Below them is a large air vent and a complex 21-inch multi-spoke wheel design. The rear of the car impresses with three slim LED strips and sophisticated graphics, complemented by eye-catching black rear diffuser.
The cabin of Lexus LF-ZC Concept is quite spacious and equipped with luxurious amenities. The front seats are low and face forward, providing a comfortable seating position for all occupants. The flat floor and panoramic sunroof create an airy overall cabin space.
The car is equipped with a rectangular-shaped steering wheel with integrated function buttons, along with two vertically positioned touchscreens. The left screen controls shifting, ADAS driver assistance features, and driving modes. The right infotainment screen controls the audio system, air conditioning, and AI functions.
In front of the passenger seat is a large touchscreen with attractive entertainment and graphics functions.
Lexus LF-ZC Concept is equipped with the “Arene OS” operating system and AI-powered voice recognition system. This system will be continuously updated to provide users with the most enjoyable experiences.
Most of the cabin’s interior is made of bamboo material. According to the Japanese automaker, bamboo is chosen as a characteristic material to demonstrate the commitment to efficient recycling of valuable environmental resources. The combination of bamboo fiber and woven fabric decoration elements will create beautiful effects under the light.
Detailed specifications regarding the car’s performance have not yet been disclosed, but Lexus has announced that the car will use its Direct4 all-wheel drive system and steer-by-wire electronic steering system similar to the RZ.
The car will also be equipped with advanced high-performance batteries designed with a column structure to increase range and reduce weight. Thanks to this, the Lexus LF-ZC can travel twice the distance of conventional electric cars, about 1,000 km on a single charge.
