Currently, many car manufacturers are researching the use of airbags on the front bumper to protect pedestrians who are hit. Ford is a typical example of this.
The product range of Ford mostly consists of large SUVs or pickup trucks. Therefore, when a collision occurs, it usually poses a higher risk to pedestrians.
To minimize this situation, recently, the American car manufacturer has submitted a patent to the US Copyright and Patent Office with the desire to equip an “airbag” on the front bumper to reduce the impact on pedestrians caused by collisions with the front of the vehicle.
The equipment provided by Ford is called the “inflatable front bumper”. This equipment is placed both above and below the front bumper and functions like a conventional airbag. When a collision is detected, this equipment will immediately deploy.
In reality, the size of this airbag is quite small and cannot fully protect the person being hit, but it helps prevent the person from being trapped under the vehicle and minimizes the potential for injuries to the person being hit.
Recently, the IIHS crash test and safety organization in North America has repeatedly issued warnings about the frequent accidents involving SUVs and pickup trucks. They encourage car manufacturers to research and redesign the front area of vehicles to minimize the impact on pedestrians in the event of a collision.
Traditionally, off-road vehicles or pickup trucks are designed with a high ground clearance to facilitate off-road driving. Therefore, the addition of airbags on the front of these vehicles also needs to be carefully considered and studied to ensure its practicality.
