According to the data collected by Car & Classic in the past year, vintage car enthusiasts are trending towards younger classic cars (almost modern classics), as well as a noticeable increase in searches for vintage cars (39% more for the top 200 most sought-after classic car models).

The editor’s secretary at Car & Classic, Chris Pollitt, affirms that due to many people having free time (and disposable income given the inability to go on vacations/travel due to the pandemic), quite a few individuals have chosen classic car ownership as a hobby and even as an investment.

In addition, vintage car enthusiasts tend to be middle-aged individuals, and the generation that grew up with cars from the 1960s to the 1970s has passed, meaning that many younger individuals who have nostalgia for the 1970s to 1980s and even the 1990s are now joining the hobby.

The most favored models include the Porsche 911, Jaguar E-Type, Ford Mustang, and Nissan Skyline, while older models such as the Ford Cortina and Volkswagen Beetle have unexpectedly declined in popularity. In this era, users’ interest has shifted towards the hunt for and acquisition of specific models they desire, rather than models readily available on the market.

Alongside the aforementioned models, sports cars like the BMW E30, Mazda RX7 with rotary engines, and classic Toyota MR2/Supras, as well as hot hatchbacks such as the Ford Escort XR3i or XR2, have all seen a significant increase in popularity, demonstrating the trend of “purchasing classic cars for experience and everyday use”.
