According to Drive, Subaru has reached an agreement to adopt Toyota’s hybrid technology in its models from the mid-2020s.

Last week, Subaru announced that it would switch to using hybrid technology developed by Toyota from 2025. According to Drive, this announcement comes less than 2 years after Subaru’s own hybrid system was criticized for its lack of fuel efficiency.

With the recent launch of the new Subaru Crosstrek and an upcoming upgrade for the Subaru Impreza later this year, the 2024 Forester becomes the most potential model for the Japanese carmaker to implement the shared hybrid technology from its domestic rival.

“Let’s call it the development of the hybrid system, or a close-generation hybrid,” said Blair Read, the leader of Subaru Australia, sharing his perspective on Toyota’s hybrid system that will soon be equipped on Subaru vehicles in the future.

Blair Read acknowledged that Subaru is still considering and cannot confirm which model will be the pioneer in using the aforementioned hybrid technology. However, the next generation of the Forester is likely to be the model that the Japanese automaker “chooses for major changes in design and engine.”

“The Forester has always been our best-selling model, so Subaru wants the next generation of the Forester to have the best of everything,” shared Blair Read.

The leader of Subaru Australia confirmed that the Forester using hybrid technology developed by Toyota will soon be available on the market.

“There is a synergy between Subaru and Toyota in terms of technology,” Blair Read revealed more about the application of Toyota’s hybrid technology for Subaru models in the future, aiming for fuel efficiency.
