Toyota, currently holding 34% market share in new car sales in Thailand, is preparing to test electric pickup trucks in this country. This move is seen as a response by the Japanese automaker to the introduction of a range of new electric vehicle models by Chinese car manufacturers.

About half of the vehicles sold in Thailand in 2022 were pickup trucks, so clearly there is still a lot of untapped potential in the electric pickup truck segment. In a recent interview with Reuters, Toyota Daihatsu Engineering & Manufacturing’s Executive Vice President, Pras Ganesh, confirmed that the company is currently producing an electric pickup truck in Thailand.

In December 2022, Toyota unveiled an all-electric pickup truck based on the Hilux. The launch event was held in Thailand and the vehicle is expected to be released to the market soon.

Ganesh said that Toyota will test a small fleet of electric pickup trucks in the city of Pattaya from early 2024 as taxis.

According to a report by research company MarkLines, Toyota holds a 39% market share in the 1-ton pickup truck segment in Thailand in the first 9 months of 2023. While electric pickup trucks have not yet been introduced in Thailand, there are already many attractive new electric vehicle models from China such as the BYD Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal, or the Great Wall Motor Ora Good Cat. Electric vehicles are expected to account for less than 9% of total new car sales in Thailand this year.
