A waiting list has just opened for the upcoming Range Rover Electric model, with the British automaker claiming it will be the “quietest and most refined Range Rover ever produced.”
Land Rover has started development of the new car from virtual reality environments and has tested numerous physical prototypes around the world, from the freezing cold of Sweden to the sweltering conditions of Dubai. The British brand is rigorously testing and evaluating the durability of the electric powertrain, battery and chassis strength, as well as conducting dynamic tests on the vehicle to determine cooling reduction levels.
The Range Rover Electric will offer performance equivalent to a top-of-the-line V8 Range Rover with towing, wading and off-road capabilities to “outperform any other luxury electric SUV”. Those who sign up for the waiting list will be among the first to have the opportunity to pre-order.
The platform for the Range Rover Electric will be Jaguar Land Rover’s flexible longitudinal modular architecture. The car will be designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK alongside the brand’s current mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Additionally, the electric drivetrain and batteries will be produced at the brand’s electric powertrain manufacturing center in Wolverhampton. The Range Rover Electric will also feature an 800-volt electrical structure, enabling fast charging, the ability to wade through water up to 850mm, and over-the-air software updates.
Thomas Müller, JLR’s Chief Product Engineer, describes: “We are aiming to create the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever produced.” “The magical elements that underpin Range Rover’s success remain unchanged: timeless, minimalist design, serene cabins, and go-anywhere capability – but are now delivered with zero-emissions exhaust pipes. And, as has been the case throughout its history, the Range Rover will continue to set benchmarks. Its first of its kind. An electric luxury SUV that delivers on Range Rover’s promise. A truly global luxury product, unseen in the industry.”
