The Toyota Yaris Cross, a B-segment SUV, was first introduced in April 2020 with two engine options: petrol and hybrid. However, after nearly 4 years on the market, the petrol variant of this model will be discontinued. The reason behind Toyota’s decision is the overwhelming popularity of the Yaris Cross Hybrid.
“The global production line for the petrol version of the Yaris Cross will be halted this month (December 2023) to meet the high demand for the hybrid variant,” revealed a Toyota Australia spokesperson to Drive journalists. The discontinuation of the petrol variant will not only affect Australia but also all other markets worldwide.

In Australia alone, the hybrid variant accounted for 75% of the total sales of the Toyota Yaris Cross in 2022. This figure dropped to 63% in 2023.
“Toyota Australia will no longer accept orders for the petrol variant. We still have enough petrol variants at the dealerships to fulfill existing orders,” said a Toyota Australia spokesperson.
Therefore, the Yaris Cross becomes Toyota’s third model without a petrol variant, following the C-HR and the new generation Camry. However, unlike the Yaris Cross, both the C-HR and the new generation Camry will not be available on the market until 2024.
Discontinuing the petrol variant will lead to an increase in the starting price of the Toyota Yaris Cross. In the Australian market, the petrol variant is priced at around 28,000 AUD (equivalent to 466 million VND), whereas the hybrid variant is priced at 30,000 AUD (500 million VND). This change may somewhat affect the sales of Toyota’s B-segment SUV.
It is worth noting that the Toyota Yaris Cross is currently sold in Australia and various other international markets such as Europe, Japan, and Singapore, presenting differences from the identically named model in Vietnam. The international Yaris Cross models are developed based on Toyota’s TNGA platform, while the Yaris Cross in Vietnam and some other Southeast Asian markets utilize Daihatsu’s DNGA platform. The design and features of these two models are entirely different.

The 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross introduced in Europe is available with two engine options: the Hybrid 130 and the Hybrid 115. The Hybrid 130 powertrain uses a naturally aspirated petrol engine with a displacement of 1.5L, combined with a more powerful electric motor, delivering a total output of 130 horsepower and a maximum torque of 185 Nm. The Hybrid 115 powertrain produces 114 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque.

In Vietnam, the Toyota Yaris Cross is currently available in two variants: petrol and hybrid. The petrol variant features a 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.5L, producing a maximum power of 105 horsepower and a maximum torque of 138 Nm, combined with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The hybrid variant, on the other hand, is equipped with a 1.5L petrol engine producing 90 horsepower, an electric motor with a maximum power of 79 horsepower, and a lithium-ion battery.
In addition, the 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross in Europe is equipped with features such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.4-inch touchscreen display, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity, over-the-air software updates, Smart Digital Key, and standard Toyota T-Mate advanced driver assistance system. The updated camera offers a wider field of view, while the T-Mate system includes new features such as forward collision warning, misacceleration prevention, active steering assistance, proximity guidance when opening doors, and rear passenger reminders.
