If this rumor becomes reality, the Mazda6 will be the second Mazda model to be discontinued in Japan recently.

In recent times, the mid-sized sedan model Mazda6 has been continuously discontinued in major markets such as the US and UK due to low sales. After these two markets, the Mazda6 may also be discontinued in its home country of Japan.

According to rumors, the Mazda6 production line will be stopped at the factory in Japan in 2024. There is currently no information about the specific production discontinuation time of this mid-sized sedan model.

If this rumor becomes a reality, the Mazda6 will be the second Mazda model to be discontinued in Japan in recent times. Previously, in December 2023, the Mazda CX-8 production line for the Japanese market was also closed. Currently, Mazda is still selling the remaining CX-8 models in stock at dealerships.

Like the general trend of the global market, the family sedan segment in Japan has also experienced a decline in sales due to the SUV boom. This is also the reason why Toyota decided to “discontinue” the Camry in the land of the rising sun in 2023. Therefore, it would not be surprising if the Mazda6 also “disappears” from this market as rumored.

This information contradicts the rumors that appeared in the Japanese automotive industry in September 2023. At that time, the Japanese media reported that the Mazda6 would be getting a new generation due to the success of SUV models like the CX-60.

In the Japanese market, the void left by the CX-8 after being discontinued will be filled by the newcomer CX-80. According to plans, the Mazda CX-80 will be officially launched in the Land of the Rising Sun this year.

The CX-80 is one of four models in Mazda’s Large Products lineup, alongside the CX-60, CX-70, and CX-90. While the Mazda CX-80 and CX-60 are mainly for Asia and Europe, the CX-70 and CX-90 are aimed at the North American market.

At the present time, the Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 have been released on the market. Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-70 is scheduled to be unveiled on January 30, 2024. The information about the release date of the CX-70 was accidentally posted on the Mazda Canada homepage and quickly taken down.

Mazda accidentally leaked the release date of the CX-70

There is a high possibility that both the Mazda CX-80 and CX-70 will share the same engines as the CX-90. According to documents submitted to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the 2024 Mazda CX-70 will have two engine options. The first is a 3.3L inline-6 turbocharged gasoline engine with a 48V mild hybrid system. In the low-end version, this engine provides a maximum output of 280 horsepower and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. Meanwhile, in the high-end version, the engine has more power, with 340 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.

The second engine option for the 2024 Mazda CX-70 is a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, similar to the CX-90. This powertrain includes a 2.5L inline-4 gasoline engine and an electric motor, but specific details have not been announced. It would not be surprising if the plug-in hybrid version of the 2024 Mazda CX-70 also uses the CX-90’s powerful 92-horsepower electric motor. The plug-in hybrid version of the 2024 Mazda CX-70 is expected to have a total output of 323 horsepower and a maximum torque of 500 Nm.
