Ancient number plate “NSW-1” from New South Wales, Australia recently was officially put up for auction.

This is the first vehicle number plate in Australia when it was issued to the first police officer of New South Wales over 110 years ago.

The officer later sold the number plate in 1930, and it was bought and registered on a car by businessman Sir Frederick Stewart. When Frederick passed away in 1961, his family kept this rare number plate.

There was a time when many people offered to buy the number plate for $134,000 USD (3.2 billion VND), but Frederick’s wife, Majorie Stewart refused. When Majorie passed away in 2000, the Stewart family was determined to keep the number plate as a sacred memento.

However, in early November 2023, the Stewart family unexpectedly put the rare number plate on the online auction platform Lloyds.

Currently, the value of the number plate has reached $6.7 million USD (approximately 163.2 billion VND) and has become the most expensive number plate ever auctioned in Australia.

In fact, this is not the final price. The number plate will continue to be auctioned for another month.

Previously in 2017, another number plate “NSW-4” from New South Wales was also successfully auctioned for $2.45 million USD (approximately 59.6 billion VND).
