Following the C-HR and the new generation Camry, the Toyota Yaris Cross is the next model to exclusively use a hybrid engine.
According to Australia’s Drive magazine, Toyota has confirmed the removal of the petrol engine option on the B-segment crossover Yaris Cross and will switch to using hybrids exclusively worldwide. “Global production of the petrol-powered Toyota Yaris Cross will end in December 2023 due to the high demand for the hybrid version,” a representative of the company said in the latest press release.
Therefore, Yaris Cross will be the 3rd Toyota model (excluding the Prius) to transition to a pure hybrid powertrain, following the C-HR and the new generation Camry.

Statistics show that in 2022, 75% of Yaris Cross cars sold are hybrid, with 3 out of every 4 Yaris Cross cars sold in the market being hybrid. In 2023, this ratio decreased to 63%, but it still shows that customer demand for the hybrid version of Yaris Cross is much higher than the petrol version.
Removing the petrol version has caused the starting price of the Toyota Yaris Cross to increase slightly by 2,000 AUD (33 million VND), reaching 30,000 USD (about 730 million VND).

In 2023, Toyota launched a new version of the Yaris Cross in the Japanese and European markets (international version). The car has been upgraded in terms of engine configuration and interior equipment. Depending on the version, the 2024 Yaris Cross is equipped with a 7-inch or 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, accompanied by a 9-inch or 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display. In addition, the Japanese CUV model is also equipped with the Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system, supporting online updates and wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

It is unclear how Toyota’s new statement will affect the Yaris Cross sold in Southeast Asia. Compared to the international version, the Yaris Cross for the Southeast Asian market also offers petrol and hybrid engine options, but differs in terms of platform (TNGA and DNGA).
In Vietnam, the Toyota Yaris Cross was launched in September 2023. In November, the car achieved sales of 1,092 units, ranking second in its segment, behind the Hyundai Creta with 1,218 units.
