Porsche, the German car manufacturer, has officially announced the discontinuation of the small sports SUV model Macan in the European market from Q1/2024.
Porsche plans to extend the life cycle of the Macan model with internal combustion engines for a few more years, along with the upcoming Macan EV. However, the company has had to stop production of the ICE version in 2024 due to new stricter cybersecurity regulations by the European Union (EU).
A Porsche spokesperson explained that the necessary upgrades for the vehicle to comply with the new regulations would be complex and costly.
The goal of the new cybersecurity regulations set forth by the European Union is to protect the electronic structure of vehicles from potential hacker attacks. Meanwhile, the new generation Macan was developed before the cybersecurity regulations were announced.
The European markets that will stop selling the Porsche Macan from the beginning of 2024 include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.
Terminating the Macan is a “major shock” for Porsche as it is the best-selling model of the company as of September 2023. Specifically, in the first 9 months of 2023, the Macan achieved a total global sales volume of 68,354 units, surpassing the Cayenne with only 64,457 units.
Although it will be discontinued in Europe, Porsche will continue to sell the Macan with internal combustion engines in other markets around the world, at least until 2026 before the new generation is released or emission regulations tighten in many countries.
Porsche plans to introduce the brand’s first all-electric Macan in 2024. However, the official launch date has not been determined yet due to software-related issues within the Volkswagen Group.
Not only the Macan but also other models distributed by the Volkswagen Group in Europe are affected by these cybersecurity regulations, such as the VW e-Up, Audi TT, and Audi R8. Additionally, the VW Transporter T6.1 van also has to be replaced and use components from the Ford Transit model.
In Vietnam, Porsche Macan is distributed by the official importer with 4 variants, with prices ranging from 3.35 billion to 5.34 billion VND.
