The Australian magazine Drive has reported that the Ford Ranger pickup truck will be equipped with a hybrid drivetrain that combines a petrol engine and an electric motor in less than a year. This engine is expected to be used in the 2024 model.
Currently, Ford Australia has not confirmed or denied the information provided by Drive.
The hybrid drivetrain installed on the Ranger is a 2.3L petrol engine combined with one or two electric motors, and the vehicle is equipped with a charging port for direct charging. The high-capacity 2.3L petrol engine will be borrowed from the Volkswagen Amarok, producing 302 horsepower and a maximum torque of 452 Nm.
The Ford Ranger PHEV sold in Australia may be produced at the Silverton plant in South Africa, which is also where the Volkswagen Amarok is currently manufactured. In addition to producing pickup trucks, the Silverton plant also manufactures SUVs and commercial vehicles for both the African and European markets.
It is unlikely that this hybrid-powered Ford Ranger will be officially distributed in Vietnam, as most popular pickup trucks in Vietnam and neighboring countries use diesel engines.
In Vietnam, the Ford Ranger is available in 6 variants: XL, XLS, XLT, Sport, Wildtrak, and Raptor. The Ranger is the best-selling pickup truck in Vietnam for several consecutive months. From the beginning of the year until the end of April, Ford Vietnam has sold 5,083 Ranger vehicles.
