On the afternoon of June 13, according to information from Ba Ria Hospital, the patient is Mr. P.D.P., 40 years old, residing in Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. Before being admitted to the hospital, Mr. P. received first aid and was given a blood transfusion.
After receiving emergency treatment and consultation, the patient was immediately taken to the operating room. The severed hand was carefully preserved in a previous ice box.
During the surgery, the doctors combined the wrist bones, sewed up the wrist joint, and also reconnected the blood vessels and nerves. The entire wrist tendons and five fingers were reconnected and the wound was sutured and covered.
After nearly 5 hours of surgery, the patient’s severed hand was successfully reattached. The fingers are warm and pink, and can perform the correct movements.
Ba Ria Hospital’s doctors said that fortunately, the patient took advantage of the golden time of emergency and applied advanced techniques in the surgery.
At present, the patient is conscious and in stable health. The hand is not very swollen and the wound is dry.
Based on this case, doctors advise people that in the unfortunate event of an accident resulting in a severed limb, they should apply pressure to the stump (the part still attached to the body), if possible, wrap the injured limb in clean cloth and place it in a nylon bag, then put it in an ice box (to avoid direct contact with the cold ice). The patient should then be taken to the hospital as soon as possible.
The longer the wait, the shorter the golden time for reattaching the limb. This leads to less effective surgery results, and in some cases, it may not be possible to save the severed limb.
