Apple has pushed back the launch date of its first electric car to 2028 and abandoned its ambition to develop a fully autonomous driving system.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple’s electric car model may be launched in 2028, which is 2 years later than the previously expected date of 2026. The smart electric car development project called “Project Titan” was launched by the company in 2014 but has encountered various technological, personnel, and financial obstacles.
Initially, Apple set out to introduce a fully autonomous electric car without a steering wheel or pedals. However, after several consecutive failures, Apple’s leadership realized that this is an unfeasible plan at the current time, even though they are one of the world’s largest technology companies.
Therefore, Apple has had to adjust its plans for its first electric car. According to Bloomberg, the US technology company will launch the “Apple Car” with level 2+ autonomous driving system, which means the driver still needs to pay attention and be ready to take control while the car is in autonomous mode, similar to Tesla’s current Autopilot system. However, Apple may gradually upgrade the features through software updates to increase the car’s autonomous driving capability to level 4.
Project Titan has extended to its 10th year and become Apple’s most expensive project, putting significant pressure on CEO Tim Cook and project lead Kevin Lynch from shareholders. Every year, the technology company has had to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on the salaries of the project’s research staff, operate the cloud computing system to control the autonomous software, and manufacture and test components of the electric car.
Bloomberg predicts that the price of the “Apple Car” will exceed $100,000, comparable to current premium electric car models such as the Tesla Model S or the Mercedes-EQS.
