As previously reported, Mitsubishi will officially unveil the new hybrid (HEV) version of the Xpander lineup, including the Xpander Cross, in early 2024. Recently, Mitsubishi Thailand unexpectedly announced the official launch date of the Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV.

Accordingly, the Mitsubishi Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV 2024 will be officially launched in the Thai market on February 1. An interesting thing is that this model is introduced in Thailand first instead of Indonesia.

Previously, at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 exhibition held in Japan in November last year, Mr. Katsuo Nakamura, Vice President of Mitsubishi, said that the Xpander HEV would be assembled at the factory in Thailand. That is why this MPV model is launched in Thailand first. “The tax incentives for hybrids in Thailand are much larger than in Indonesia. Therefore, the price of hybrid vehicles in Thailand may be equivalent to that of gasoline vehicles“, Nakamura explained.

The incentive that Nakamura mentioned refers to the import tax exemption policy for the main parts of hybrid vehicles, applicable in Thailand from 2022 to 2025. These parts include batteries, electric motors, compressors, battery control systems, control units, and gearboxes.

Specific information about the Mitsubishi Xpander HEV 2024 has not yet been announced. According to some sources, the hybrid version of this model will continue to use the current 4A91 gasoline engine. This is a 4-cylinder MIVEC gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.5L, generating a maximum power of 105 horsepower and a maximum torque of 141 Nm.

This engine will be combined with an electric motor and battery in the Mitsubishi Xpander HEV 2024. Mitsubishi will focus on reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for the new Xpander HEV.

Mitsubishi Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV 2024 are expected to have the same design as the regular gasoline version

Except for the engine, the new Mitsubishi Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV are expected to have the same design, convenience, and safety features as the regular gasoline version. Depending on the market, this 7-seater MPV is equipped with automatic on/off headlights, adjustable light beam height, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED taillights, automatic wipers, leather seats, an 8-inch digital gauge cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity, a 6-speaker sound system, automatic air conditioning, air filters, wireless phone charging, cruise control, electronic parking brake, and automatic temporary braking.

After Thailand, the new Mitsubishi Xpander HEV and Xpander Cross HEV may continue to be launched in other Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam. In 2023, the Mitsubishi Xpander was the best-selling model in the Vietnamese market with a cumulative sales of 19,740 units, a 10% decrease compared to 2022.
