“Sonata has emerged as a pivotal factor in Hyundai’s growth not only in the US, but worldwide,” stated Dave Zuchowski, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.

“Throughout Sonata’s 30-year history, we have continuously adapted this model to meet the evolving demands of our customers. This summer, the Sonata family will welcome a new member in the form of an all-new Plug-in hybrid version, providing consumers with even more options,” added Dave.

Sonata holds a prominent position within Hyundai’s lineup of vehicles.

Introduced in 1988, Sonata played a significant role in establishing Hyundai as a leading brand in the United States. To date, Hyundai has successfully sold over 2.3 million Sonata vehicles to American consumers, including nearly 80,000 Sonata Hybrids.

First generation (introduced in 1985)

Hyundai’s staff designed Sonata as one of their first models, equipped with rear-wheel drive. This model jumpstarted the Sonata line, achieving sales of over 1 million vehicles in Korea.

Second generation (introduced in 1988)

In contrast to its predecessor, the second generation Sonata featured front-wheel drive, resulting in enhanced interior space. As Korea’s first independently designed model, Sonata boasts a sleek, sporty design.

In the 90s, as digital technology began to replace traditional methods, Sonata’s third generation designers kept up with the evolving trend. This new model was equipped with numerous modern features, including automatic mirrors and ABS brakes.

Fourth generation (introduced in 1998)

Released in 1998, the fourth generation Sonata became the best-selling sedan in Korea from February 1999 to August 2000. Additionally, this generation gained popularity among European customers due to its engine improvements and fuel-saving HIVEC transmission.

In 2004, J.D. Power rated the fourth generation Sonata as the best mid-size sedan for quality in the United States.

Fifth generation (introduced in 2004)

The fifth-generation Sonata features a European-inspired design and is equipped with numerous advanced features. This generation received high praise from media outlets and consumers worldwide.

Sixth generation (introduced in 2009)

The sixth generation Sonata was one of Hyundai’s first models designed according to the fluidic sculpture philosophy. Combining fuel efficiency, standard performance, and a distinctive design, this generation achieved record-breaking global sales and introduced the first Sonata hybrid in 2010.

Seventh generation (introduced in 2014)

The latest generation Sonata continues to embrace the fluidic sculpture design philosophy.

Building upon the improved fluidic sculpture design language, the seventh generation Sonata expands the product lineup with the introduction of two environmentally friendly models, including the Sonata Hybrid 2014 and the first-ever Sonata Plug-in Hybrid unveiled at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
