Recently, the research team at Recurrent Auto conducted a survey on 6,300 Tesla Model 3 cars in the US and discovered that after 5 years of use, the battery of the Tesla Model 3 still maintains approximately 90% capacity. This finding is quite impressive and suggests that the battery degradation in the Tesla Model 3 is minimal over time.
Notably, Youtuber Andy Slye’s Tesla Model 3 has shown exceptional battery performance. After continuous use for 5 years and accumulating about 217,260 km on the odometer, the battery retains up to 95% capacity, showcasing its durability.
To ensure the long lifespan of his vehicle’s battery, Andy Slye follows two key practices. Firstly, he primarily utilizes regular charging, limiting fast charging despite having access to over 3.2 million km of free fast charging at Supercharger stations. Although various studies have shown that both regular charging and fast charging have little impact on the lifespan of electric car batteries, it is recommended to avoid fast charging when the battery is nearly empty or overly full. These two states have higher resistance, which can accelerate battery degradation.
The second practice involves charging the car’s battery to only 80% of its capacity. This method helps extend the battery’s lifespan and is a recommendation supported by multiple research organizations. Surprisingly, many car owners overlook this advice and leave their cars plugged in overnight, resulting in fully charging the battery to 100%.
