On March 3, the distributor of Volkswagen in Vietnam announced the release of the Virtus, a B-segment sedan. The Virtus is offered in two versions, the Elegance priced at 949 million dong, and the Luxury at 1.069 billion dong.
The Volkswagen Virtus was first introduced in 2018 and is considered as the sedan version of the Polo hatchback. It shares the same platform as the T-Cross, which has been available in Vietnam since May 2022. The Virtus is the only sedan option from Volkswagen after the Passat was discontinued.
In terms of dimensions, the Volkswagen Virtus has a compact size, with a length of 4,561 mm, a width of 1,752 mm, a height of 1,507 mm, and a wheelbase length of 2,651 mm.
The Virtus comes with standard features such as LED daytime running lights, fog lights, 16-inch wheels, and electrically adjustable mirrors. The Luxury variant offers additional features including automatic headlights.
While the exterior of the Volkswagen Virtus may not have many standout features, the interior of the car exudes a modern and premium feel. It boasts a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The steering wheel is similar to the T-Cross and includes paddle shifters behind it. Standard equipment includes leather seats, a 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat, automatic air conditioning, and wireless phone charging.
The Elegance variant of the Virtus comes with a 3.5-inch TFT instrument cluster, while the Luxury variant features an 8-inch digital display. The Luxury variant also offers ventilated perforated seats.
Similar to the T-Cross, the Volkswagen Virtus is equipped with a turbocharged direct fuel injection engine that produces 115 horsepower at 5,000 – 5,500 rpm and 178 Nm of torque at 1,750 – 4,000 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and comes with front-wheel drive.
The Virtus comes with a range of safety features including electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring, traction control, hill start assist, reverse sensors, rearview camera, and electronic immobilizer.
Positioned as a more premium option compared to mainstream B-segment sedans like the Toyota Vios and Honda City, the Volkswagen Virtus has a price range of 949 – 1.069 billion dong, which even surpasses that of D-segment sedans like the Mazda6 (829 – 1.039 billion dong) and Kia K5 (904 – 1.049 billion dong).
Experts are questioning whether Vietnamese customers will be convinced by the Volkswagen Virtus, considering its compact size, adequate passenger amenities, and relatively high price of $43,000.
