Kia Chairman, Mr. Ho-sung Song, recently announced plans to expand electric vehicle production by producing dedicated electric vehicles in 4 major markets, according to Thekoreancarblog. Alongside the EV9, which is produced in Korea, Kia will introduce mid-size electric models in China starting next year and small and mid-size electric models in India from 2025.
In addition to their plans for electric vehicles, Kia also announced the development of two pickup truck models, one using electric vehicle technology and the other using internal combustion engines. The pure electric pickup truck model will target the North American market, while the pickup truck model with traditional combustion engines will cater to emerging markets.
Recently, there have been sightings of a Kia pickup truck prototype, speculated to be the Tasman. The prototype features a square-shaped front grille, vertically placed LED daytime running lights inspired by the Mohave, and considerable ground clearance. The test drive photos also reveal the use of relatively small wheels.
Details about the powertrain of this pickup truck model are scarce. However, sources suggest that Kia Australia is preparing to introduce a new pickup truck model that will rival the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. The new model is expected to feature a diesel powertrain, possibly the turbocharged 4-cylinder CRDi 2.2L diesel engine used in the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe. The 3.0L turbo-diesel engine from the Mohave is also a potential option. Additionally, a pure electric version of the pickup truck model may be introduced at a later stage.
The upcoming Kia pickup truck model is said to be developed on a new ladder-frame platform, which it shares with the Kia Mohave SUV sold in Korea.
