If you are familiar with Toyota Vios and Camry sedans in Vietnam nowadays, then in the 90s of the previous century, the Toyota brand was already well-known in the country with its Corona sedan line. During this period, foreign car companies started to invest in Vietnam, and the Toyota Corona cars that were on the roads 30 years ago were mainly imported cars from the 7th to 9th generations, with front-wheel drive.
The Toyota Corona was one of the first car lines that Toyota exported and it was positioned to directly compete with its rival, the Nissan Bluebird. As a result, the older generation Corona cars with rear-wheel drive are now quite rare in used car transactions and are sought after by car enthusiasts.
Recently, an auto salon in Ho Chi Minh City has put up for sale a 1966 Toyota Corona car that has been renovated and still looks quite new, almost like a unique piece. The interior of the car is simple, with features like a speedometer on the dashboard, similar to motorcycles, and a 2-spoke steering wheel.
This particular Toyota Corona is from the 3rd generation, with the production code RT40, and it is a 2-door sedan version. The design of this generation was a collaboration with Italian designer Battista Farina. The car has overall dimensions of 4,110 x 1,550 x 1,420 mm (length x width x height) and weighs 971 kg.
Under the hood, the car is equipped with a 1.5-liter I4 engine with the code name 2R, producing a maximum power of 74 horsepower at 5000 rpm and a maximum torque of 116 Nm at 2600 rpm. It is paired with a manual transmission.
This 54-year-old Toyota Corona currently has license plate number 60 from Dong Nai province and has a market price of only 43 million VND, which is lower than the price of a scooter.
The Toyota Corona model was produced from 1957 to 2001, spanning 10 generations. The last generation, built from 1996 to 2001, had a special version for the Japanese market called the Toyota Corona Premio. This was also the last version to bear the Corona name in Japan, as it was later replaced by the Avensis line.
