The Classic department of Ferrari, known as Classiche, has recently completed a 14-month restoration project on a 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione. This iconic supercar has been meticulously restored down to the smallest detail at Ferrari’s factory in Italy. There are rumors that Ferrari is currently seeking certification to validate the car’s originality post-restoration.
This particular 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione with the chassis number 2321GT has an intriguing history. It was originally owned by Tiziano Carugati, a Swiss collector and car dealer. On February 2, 1961, the car was delivered from the Ferrari factory to Italian driver Dorio Serafini. In 1964, it changed hands again, this time to a Frenchman named René Richard. Unfortunately, Richard had an accident shortly after acquiring the car, and he hired Lucien Bianchi to repair the bodywork. Later that same year, Richard sold the car to Jacques Pollet, and that’s when the troubles began.
Pollet owned the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione until 1977 when it was mysteriously stolen. The car was eventually recovered, leading to a detailed investigation by his insurance company. It was discovered that Pollet had committed insurance fraud, although the exact circumstances remain unclear.
After being auctioned, the car changed hands again. In 1985, it was involved in another accident. By 1990, the original engine was replaced, but seven years later, the original chassis and engine were finally reunited. Since then, the car has participated in numerous Tour Auto events. Now, the Swiss collector who currently owns it wants to verify the authenticity of the engine and chassis.
Prior to restoration, the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione had a yellow exterior and brown interior. After the restoration, the car now sports a silver exterior while maintaining its original interior color.
The total cost of the restoration of the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione remains unknown, but it is safe to assume that it required a significant investment to bring this historic car back to its original glory.
