The seventh generation of the Nissan Patrol will undergo comprehensive upgrades from the previous version, including the chassis, engine, and equipment.

The new generation Nissan Patrol is set to be launched in 2024 and is expected to bring significant improvements in terms of performance and technology. The question now arises as to how this SUV will stack up against its main rival, the Toyota Land Cruiser. A senior executive at Nissan has provided an honest answer to this question.

Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s Global Product Strategy and Planning Director, boldly claims that the upcoming Patrol will be “much better” than the Toyota Land Cruiser. Espinosa confidently made this statement during an interview with Australian media at the 2023 Japan Auto Show. Additionally, he shared some insights about the configuration and equipment of this large SUV.

Espinosa confirmed previous rumors that the Nissan Patrol will transition to a twin-turbo V6 engine, replacing the naturally aspirated V8. The new engine is said to offer superior power, towing capacity, and acceleration compared to its predecessor.

According to a report from Drive, the 2024 Nissan Patrol will feature a non-electrified gasoline engine, as a diesel powertrain is currently deemed “not feasible.” However, Espinosa hinted at the possibility of equipping the Patrol with a hybrid ePower system in the near future. On the other hand, he dismissed the idea of an electric version, citing the limitations of current EV technology for large SUVs. He emphasized that these vehicles are designed for long-distance trips and off-road adventures, often involving heavy-duty towing, which poses challenges for current electric motors. This will remain the case until solid-state battery technology becomes more prevalent.

Espinosa explains that the more potent engine will be coupled with Nissan’s large ladder frame chassis, resulting in significant improvements in overall performance and a dynamic driving experience. “In terms of overall performance and dynamic driving experience, you will witness substantial improvements. The dynamic performance is exceptionally well-executed on the road at high speeds, and the responsiveness, chassis, dynamics, and steering system have all been significantly enhanced,” he stated.

In addition, the executive also revealed that the new Patrol will come equipped with the latest advanced technologies. Espinosa acknowledged that the current version is somewhat dated, but the new model will boast numerous “significant improvements.” The sixth-generation Nissan Patrol was introduced in 2010 and received two consecutive upgrades in 2014 and 2019. Nevertheless, the Japanese SUV still lags behind its competitors in the segment.

Although the company has kept details about the 2024 Patrol’s exterior design under wraps, given the SUV’s significance in the brand’s lineup, it is expected to feature an evolutionary design rather than a radical one. According to Carscoops, the new Nissan Patrol will draw inspiration from the QX Monogram concept, which provides a glimpse of the forthcoming Infiniti QX80.
