According to Thekoreancarblog, Mr. Ho-sung Song, the Chairman of Kia, recently announced plans to increase production of dedicated electric vehicles in four major markets. In addition to the EV9 produced in Korea, mid-size electric models will be introduced in China next year, and small and mid-size electric models will be produced in India starting in 2025.
In addition to electric vehicles, Kia also revealed plans for two pickup truck models that will utilize electric vehicle technology as well as internal combustion engines. A pure electric pickup truck model will be developed for the North American market, while a pickup truck model with traditional combustion engines will be developed for emerging markets.
A prototype of the Kia pickup truck, believed to be the Tasman, was recently spotted during a test drive. The prototype photos show that the Tasman has a high ground clearance, a square-shaped front grille, and vertically placed LED daytime running lights inspired by the Mohave. The vehicle also appears to have relatively small wheels.
Details about the powertrain of this pickup truck model are currently scarce. However, Kia Australia has revealed that the new pickup truck model will be a strong competitor to the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. It is rumored that the pickup truck will be equipped with a diesel powertrain, with the possibility of using either a 2.2L turbocharged 4-cylinder CRDi diesel engine or a 3.0L turbo-diesel engine from the Mohave. There is also speculation that a pure electric version of the pickup truck model may be offered later on.
The upcoming Kia pickup truck model is expected to be developed on a new ladder-frame platform, which it will share with the Kia Mohave SUV sold in Korea.
