The Formula 1 Hanoi race, originally scheduled to take place from April 3-5, 2020, has been postponed after extensive discussions and careful consideration by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Formula One World Championship Ltd (the governing body of Formula 1), the People’s Committee of Hanoi, the Vietnam Motor Sports Association (VMA), and with the agreement of Vietnam Grand Prix Company (VGPC).

This decision is particularly difficult as 2020 marks Vietnam’s debut as an official member among the 22 countries hosting one of the most prestigious and thrilling motor racing events worldwide. In preparation for the race, VGPC, with the support of the People’s Committee of Hanoi, has invested heavily in infrastructure, technology, and engineering to meet the rigorous requirements of F1 and FIA. The Formula 1 race track in My Dinh, built to international standards, has been fully completed and is ready for action.

Unfortunately, the current Covid-19 pandemic presents complex challenges, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified it as a global pandemic. Consequently, the Formula 1 VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix race must be postponed to prioritize the safety of the public, attendees, racing teams, and associated units.

The FIA, Formula 1, the People’s Committee of Hanoi, VMA, and VGPC remain committed to closely coordinating and monitoring the progress of the Covid-19 pandemic in order to identify a safe and suitable alternative time for the race. An announcement will be made to the public in a timely manner. Policies pertaining to customers, associated units, and partners of VGPC will also be promptly communicated.

The 2020 Formula 1 VinFast Vietnam Grand Prix is highly anticipated, and all parties involved – FIA, Formula 1, the People’s Committee of Hanoi, VMA, and VGPC – are dedicated to ensuring that when the Covid-19 pandemic is brought under control, the F1 race will shine on the Hanoi track, fulfilling the expectations of racing teams, as well as Vietnamese and global fans.
