Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2014.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2014 marks the return of Mitsubishi with the spirit of “To reach the new peak is the QUALITY.” This spirit was clearly demonstrated through a journey of more than 2,200km in Vietnam, along with the Pajero Sport. The Pajero Sport successfully completed 5 stages of the longest journey in Vietnam with 20 families, overcoming nearly 20 big and small passes, conquering over 100km of off-road, sand dunes, and pristine beaches…

The durability and excellent performance of the Pajero Sport come from Mitsubishi’s “core values,” which include the MIVEC engine technology, the Super Select 4WD system, and the intelligent INVECS-II 5-speed automatic transmission.

How the new MIVEC engine works.

MIVEC engine technology

Mitsubishi started applying the MIVEC technology (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control System) in engines in 1993. At that time, MIVEC was at the forefront of technologies that helped save fuel consumption to about 16km per liter of gasoline in city driving conditions (equivalent to 6.26 liters/100km).

This technology was one of the first solutions to improve power and protect the environment by affecting the fuel injection system.

The MIVEC engine is one of the first solutions to improve power and protect the environment by affecting the fuel injection system.

The MIVEC technology uses different cam shapes to open the intake valves in two engine modes: low speed and high speed, helping to increase the maximum power and torque of the engine. When the engine operates at low RPM, MIVEC selects a small cam shape and provides a stable combustion mixture with less exhaust gas. When the throttle is opened and the engine speed increases, MIVEC allows the increase of the timing and opening stroke of the intake valves, providing the engine with greater power and torque compared to engines that do not use this technology.

Power and torque of the engine are achieved when using MIVEC in 2 modes

The special feature of the MIVEC technology is the arrangement of the camshaft with 3 different cam shapes. The largest cam shape is placed in the middle, while the two smaller and medium cam shapes are placed on either side (as shown in figure 2). Although there are these 3 cam shapes, they only create 2 engine modes: low speed mode, which uses the small and medium cam shapes, and high speed mode, which uses the large cam shape. In low speed mode, the intake valves are driven by two small and medium cam shapes and are independently controlled by two separate rocker arms. In high speed mode, the large cam shape is driven by the T-junction, which controls the timing and opening stroke of both intake valves when the engine is running.

Drive arrangement of intake valves

When the engine is running in low speed mode, the T-junction is still connected to the large cam shape, but it only moves freely and does not contact with the rocker arms of the intake valves. At that time, the small and medium cam shapes driven by the camshaft control the appropriate lift and opening time for the intake valves. Inside the rocker arm, there are springs that compress pistons, and the T-junction moves freely and does not control the rocker arms. Additionally, using two different cam shapes to open the intake valves in low speed mode helps create a swirl for the incoming air inside the cylinder, making the combustion process stable and reducing emissions.

Structure of the MIVEC system

When the engine is in high speed mode, MIVEC controls the valve opening oil to increase the oil pressure to the piston, causing the piston to lift up and contact the T-junction. At that time, the large cam shape acts on both rocker arms and controls the opening and closing of the intake valves. Thanks to the larger cam shape, it increases the opening time and stroke of the intake valves, thereby increasing the power and torque of the engine.

Currently, this technology has been equipped in the new Pajero Sport available in the Vietnamese market. The new Pajero Sport uses a V6 MIVEC 3.0L engine with a power of 220 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 281 Nm at 4,000 rpm, along with the option of 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain.

Super Select 4WD system

In addition to the MIVEC engine technology, the Pajero Sport features the Super Select system, an impressive 4WD system that has helped Mitsubishi’s racing team win 12 victories at the Dakar Rally.

Super Select system makes it easy for drivers to operate the Pajero Sport.

This system combines the advantages of the 2WD active mode and the 4WD active mode on the Super Select 4WD system, allowing the transfer of modes from 2WD to 4WD even when the car is running at a speed of 100 km/h.

With the Super Select system, drivers can use the 2WD mode for flat road conditions with smoothness, low noise level, and the lowest fuel consumption. Additionally, the 4H mode helps the vehicle operate stably and smoothly on the highway, improving grip on slippery roads. With a simple operation of pushing the transfer lever, you can switch to 4WD mode.

INVECS transmission

In addition to the impressive MIVEC engine technology and the Super Select 4WD system, the Pajero Sport also features INVECS technology. This is an intelligent automatic transmission control program applied by Mitsubishi on automatic transmissions (INVECS-II applies to step gears, and INVECS-III applies to continuously variable transmissions – CVT).

Intelligent INVECS transmission.

In simple terms, the INVECS transmission is an automatic transmission controlled by a computer, with the ability to “learn” the driver’s driving style through the “Adaptive Control” program. As soon as the car starts moving, the computer begins “observing” the driver’s driving style, such as throttle input, coordination between the accelerator and brake… After a short period of testing the shifting programs, the computer determines the most appropriate shifting program for the driver’s driving style. This control program can be imagined as having someone sitting next to you, monitoring your driving style and adjusting the automatic transmission accordingly.

A reliable choice

With these top technologies combined with improvements in appearance and cabin space, the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is truly a strong contender in the 7-seater SUV segment and a reliable choice for those who love family vehicles.

In Vietnam, the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is available in 3 versions: Gasoline 4×4 AT, Gasoline 4×2 AT, Diesel 4×2 MT with prices of 1.015 billion VND, 930 million VND, and 835 million VND respectively.
