Audi Aztec, also known as Aztec Barchetta Giugiaro, was designed by renowned Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro from Italdesign in the 1980s. The exact number of cars produced remains uncertain, but they are considered extremely rare, with estimates ranging from 15 to 50 units.
After more than three decades, there is still at least one Aztec Barchetta Giugiaro in fairly good condition available on the used car market. The car is currently listed on a well-known online car sales website, Mobile.de. The seller, MTM, is asking for a “buyout” price of $206,500, which is significantly lower than the previous sale price of nearly $1.1 million.
MTM claims that their Aztec Barchetta Giugiaro is one of the last cars to roll off the assembly line in 1992. These supercars, powered by Audi engines, were handcrafted for four years. Interestingly, it took three years before this rare supercar found its first and only owner. With just 1,000 km on the odometer, it’s safe to say that most of its life has been spent “sitting in a glass cabinet”.
The design of the Aztec Barchetta Giugiaro can be considered ahead of its time, featuring a roofless structure similar to current models like the Ferrari Monza, Aston Martin V12 Speedster, and McLaren Elva. The interior design, with separated driver and passenger seats, is reminiscent of the Ferrari supercar. The leather interior remains in good condition, and the plastic surfaces show minimal signs of wear.
However, the level of refinement and the sleek lines of the Audi Aztec cannot match those of more recent models.
The Aztec Barchetta Giugiaro is equipped with a 2.2L 5-cylinder engine sourced from the Audi Quattro, which explains why it is often referred to as the Audi Aztec. It is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox borrowed from the Lancia Delta Integrale.
