A gang of armed thieves threatened the car owner in an attempt to steal his expensive Porsche. However, their plans were foiled because they did not know how to operate a manual car.

On the evening of November 26, at approximately 11:55 pm, the Maryland state police received a report regarding a carjacking incident that took place on Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda. The victim, Myo Maung, was the owner of a Porsche 718 Boxster. He had stepped out of the vehicle to open the hood when he was suddenly ambushed by a group of three robbers. One of the assailants brandished a firearm and threatened Maung for the car keys, while the other two accomplices stood guard.

After seizing the keys from Maung, one of the thieves attempted to enter the vehicle but quickly realized that he was unable to drive it due to the fact that the Porsche was equipped with a manual transmission. Just over thirty seconds after starting the car, the engine came to an abrupt halt. Another member of the gang also made an unsuccessful attempt to start the vehicle, forcing all three perpetrators to abandon the valuable Porsche and flee the scene.

As the robbers struggled, Maung sought refuge in a nearby restaurant and promptly alerted the police. To his astonishment, upon returning to the scene, he discovered that the thieves had fled, leaving behind the abandoned vehicle. It was only upon reviewing the footage captured by the car’s dashcam that both Maung and law enforcement authorities realized the role played by the manual transmission in ensuring the car’s “safety”.

Interestingly, failed car theft attempts due to the thieves’ lack of knowledge in operating manual transmissions are not uncommon. In an incident in the United States in 2016, a young man’s attempts to steal a car were thwarted as he lacked the ability to drive a manual vehicle. Similarly, in 2018, a group of robbers seized control of a woman’s car in Nashville but abandoned the vehicle shortly after as they were unable to start it.
