An SUV model with a 3-door body style was introduced in 1977 by a Russian brand.

In the age of electric vehicles, we have recently witnessed the discontinuation of iconic cars such as the Audi TT and Audi R8, Dodge Challenger and Charger, Ferrari F8 Tributo and Portofino, and the legendary Ford Fiesta. Even impressive models like the McLaren 720S and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé will no longer be produced after 2024.

Although pure off-road models are slowly disappearing, there are still some “old-timers” that continue to receive upgrades, like the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series and now the Lada Niva.

AvtoVAZ, the Russian automaker, has recently updated the Lada Niva SUV, which has been present in certain markets for almost 50 years. The Lada Niva is still a 3-door SUV that spans 3.7 meters in length, and its design has remained largely unchanged since its debut in 1977.

In 2022, due to sanctions against Russia, the Lada Niva continued production but lacked airbags, ABS, and some other basic features that have been present in cars for decades. However, in the upcoming 2024 version, AvtoVAZ is introducing major updates to the Lada Niva model, including an anti-lock braking system for both the Legend and Travel versions.

Additionally, the 2024 Lada Niva will also come with an updated engine that complies with Euro 5 regulations. It’s worth noting that Euro 5 has been in effect since 2009 and is now considered outdated. Euro 6 was implemented in 2014, and Euro 7 is expected to be introduced around 2025. When the Lada Niva resumed production in 2022, it was only equipped with an engine that met Euro 2 standards, established in 1996.

The premium Travel version of the Lada Niva 2024 will feature amenities such as a cruise control system with a speed limiter, an LCD display, and two-tone alloy wheels. Russia’s Auto Pro News magazine reports that the electronic stability control system will be reintroduced by the end of December. However, essential safety features like airbags are still absent from this off-road SUV model. Both versions are currently in production.

With the new upgrades, the price of the Lada Niva 2024 will significantly increase. Previously, the starting price of the Lada Niva Legend was $9,140 (~221 million VND). However, the cheapest price for the new version will be $10,200 (~247 million VND). On the other hand, the previous Travel version, which used to cost $13,200 (~320 million VND), will now be priced at $13,400 (~325 million VND).
