The unique idea of the carstay originated from Hang and her friends’ love for travel, especially their experience with adventure trips. They chose the carstay because it’s a camper van that can carry a lot of things and is as convenient as a house. Moreover, this car represents freedom, passion for movement, and romance.
However, turning this idea into reality required a lot of effort and determination, especially as these cars are rare in Vietnam. Hang shared that they searched for a long time but couldn’t find any for sale. Most car enthusiasts who own these cars are collectors, making them even rarer. There are only 15 cars like this in the whole country.
“We were almost about to give up when we luckily met someone who introduced us to another car enthusiast who owned two cars, and one of them was just a shell. We had to convince her to sell it to us. That’s when our carstay journey began,” said Hang.

To realize their dream of adventurous trips with the carstay, Hang and her friends faced many challenges and had funny stories: “Looking back, it’s funny to remember. We designed the car together and hired someone to do the basic interior decorations. We paid a deposit, and the next day, that person disappeared and ran away with the money. We were heartbroken. Luckily, we found someone who truly liked our idea and helped us create the most meticulous and beautiful interior decorations for the car. We made every detail inside the car by ourselves, from the fabric of the curtains to buying each cup and vase…“
Indeed, “owning a classic car requires a lot of effort.” You have to genuinely love the car to make it happen. Hang spent around 1 billion VND to buy this car and create the interior decorations, not to mention the warranty, maintenance, and minor repairs. “Because it’s a classic car, it requires continuous care and maintenance. Owning a classic car brings unexpected surprises on the road, but the most enjoyable part is that if the car has any problems, you just need to honk, and all the car enthusiasts, even if they don’t know who I am, will eagerly help.”
On the bright side, this car is incredibly cute, and you can customize the interior decorations. Kombi car enthusiasts usually have a motto: “This car is for experiencing the journey, not just rushing to the destination. It symbolizes freedom and inspires a lot. Just loving it is enough.”

The limited space makes the carstay more compact compared to other types of travel cars, but it’s also one of its weaknesses. Hang shared: “Although I would love to have a bathroom and a toilet, there’s not enough space. However, the space is extremely cozy, compact, and suitable for short trips“
Therefore, when choosing furniture for the carstay, the key is to ensure that the living space is not cramped and still comfortable. This can be achieved by selecting lightweight and foldable tools designed for backpackers. These tools should be beautiful and complement the car’s decor. “We had to study water supply and drainage very carefully, and in the end, we were truly satisfied.”
