Tesla China achieved sales of 82,432 vehicles in November, manufactured at the Shanghai Giga factory. This represents a 14.31% increase from October and a 17.81% decrease compared to the same period last year. These figures include both domestic sales and exports.
Unlike Tesla China, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) reports monthly sales figures. Thanks to this, we have insights into the operational performance of the Shanghai factory.
Tesla witnessed a 14% growth in November, selling 82,432 units in this populous market
In the Chinese market, over 80,000 Tesla vehicles have been purchased, with customers eagerly anticipating the delivery date of the Tesla Cybertruck, a significant model for the company’s sales volume.
For Tesla China, the November sales growth is a positive result following two months of decline caused by production pressures at the Shanghai factory. In September, significant changes were made to tools and the production line to accommodate the upgraded 2024 Model 3 and the China-exclusive Model Y.
In addition, numerous midsize electric sedans, including the new Deepal SL03, Huawei Luxeed S7, and the new BYD Seal, were launched by local automakers last year to compete with the Model 3.
As of 2023, Tesla has sold a total of 853,603 vehicles manufactured in China, representing a 30% increase compared to the same period last year. The factory’s production capacity is 950,000 electric vehicles per year, with the current production limited to the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV.
Despite a price war in China, Tesla has maintained its confidence in recent months. In September, there were reports of the updated Highland Model 3 being more expensive compared to the previous version by 12%. However, a majority of the new Model 3 units are now being exported, and Tesla relies heavily on sales of the Model Y SUV in the Chinese market.
In November, Tesla slightly increased the prices of its vehicles. On November 9, the new Model 3 Long Range and Model Y AWD Long Range saw price increases of 1,500 yuan ($210) and 2,500 yuan ($350) respectively. On November 14, the Model 3 RWD and Model Y RWD experienced price increases of 1,500 yuan and 2,500 yuan respectively. Finally, on November 21, the Model Y AWD Long Range had an additional price bump of 2,000 yuan.
Since the introduction of the 2024 Model 3 in September, the prices of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV have become nearly equal in China, with a price increase of over 12% compared to the previous version.
