This is an incredibly fascinating innovation by the Japanese automaker to enhance the driver’s interaction with electric vehicles, breaking free from the constraints of the typical 6-7-speed transmissions. Recently, a patent filed by the Japanese brand showcased a groundbreaking transmission system with an astonishing 14 speeds specifically designed for electric cars.

The patent dives into intricate details about the inner workings of this transmission system. Drivers have the freedom to choose between manual transmission options based on their preferences. “The number of virtual gear stages can vary from six or more, to fewer than six,” the document highlights. “The driver can select their preferred pattern according to their liking.

However, the notion of “choosing a pattern” can be somewhat misleading. The manufacturer does not actually employ a mechanical system with multiple physical gear levers, as one might expect. Instead, there is a fixed number of levers; for illustrative purposes, let’s consider Toyota’s example of four levers.

The gear selection process is similar to that of a conventional manual transmission, with the added convenience of the gear returning to the neutral position after use. When the driver shifts gears, the virtual model automatically switches to the next ratio. For instance, if the six-gear pattern is selected, the display will present the available ratios, enticing the driver to move up to the seventh gear and beyond or to alternatively shift down to the fifth gear and the corresponding set of gears.

Historically, conventional passenger cars have never exceeded seven speeds, and for good reason. A 14-speed manual transmission would not be practical in conjunction with gasoline-powered engines. However, in the case of Toyota’s simulated manual transmission, the company believes that providing users with a range of choices will do no harm.
