Mazda originates from Japan and is a well-known car brand worldwide. It was established in 1920 in Hiroshima, Japan, under the name Toyo Cork Kogyo and later changed to Toyo Kogyo. Mazda started producing its first sedans in 1940 but had to temporarily halt production due to the war. After the war, Mazda quickly gained fame for its rotary engines, introduced in 1959.
In Vietnam, Mazda cars were first imported, assembled, and sold in the Vietnamese market in 1994 through the Hoa Binh Automobile Joint Stock Company (VMC). However, the joint venture ceased production in 2005. Mazda made a comeback in Vietnam in 2011 through VinaMazda, a subsidiary of Thaco.
In March 2018, Thaco inaugurated the most advanced Mazda automobile manufacturing plant in the region. The plant is located in the Chu Lai industrial zone and has a current production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, with plans to increase it to 100,000 vehicles per year in the future. Thaco also plans to expand its export to other markets in the region.
In Vietnam, Mazda cars primarily focus on the sedan, SUV, and pickup truck segments. They are known for their good handling and beautiful design, contributing to Thaco’s market share in the automotive market.
