The Mazda CX-5 is the best-selling and most popular model, with the Japanese brand selling 365,135 units last year. Now, the third generation will soon hit the U.S. market before other markets worldwide.

Drive reported that the official launch date for the new CX-5 has not been announced yet, but the Japanese automaker confirmed that the model will be available at dealerships alongside the CX-50 and full-size SUV CX-90. Moreover, the mid-size crossover will retain its 4-cylinder engine configuration, front-wheel drive, and optional all-wheel drive.

The third-generation CX-5 is expected to feature a hybrid drivetrain, similar to the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla Cross. Mazda and Toyota have a collaboration, with Toyota owning a 5% stake in Mazda. They have already partnered in producing models like the Mazda3 hybrid. In the United States, both the Corolla Cross and Mazda3 are assembled at the Mazda Toyota plant in Huntsville, Alabama.

Previously, Mazda announced plans to release 3 fully electric models, 5 plug-in hybrid models, and 3 hybrid models by 2025, but the specific models have not been disclosed yet. There are also rumors of rotary engine-powered hybrid cars. Mazda has hinted at equipping the CX-30 with a rotary engine in the U.S. market and has even filed a patent for a plug-in hybrid sports car with a rotary engine.

The CX-30 will not rely on the internal combustion engine to power the vehicle. Instead, it will function to generate 17.8 kWh to recharge the battery pack, providing an operating range of 85 km. Jeff Guyton, Mazda’s CEO for North America, mentioned that the automaker is considering re-entering the U.S. market, but the focus is currently on launching the CX-30 in Europe and Japan.

The CX-70, a two-row version of the CX-90, will complete Mazda’s SUV lineup, joining the CX-5 in the near future.
