Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu recently purchased a 1985 Toyota Corolla II GL, making it approximately 38 years old.
Toyota Corolla was first introduced in 1966 and reached the milestone of 50 million cars produced in July 2021, making it the best-selling car of all time.
In Vietnam, the majority of Toyota Corolla cars belong to the 10th, 11th, and 12th generations. The older the generation, the fewer the number of cars, with only a few remaining. The Toyota Corolla II GL purchased by Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu is also a rare model.
According to information, the Toyota Corolla II GL purchased by the chairman of Trung Nguyen Coffee is from 1985, which places it in the 5th generation. During that era, the 5th generation was considered one of the most popular generations of the Corolla, with over 3.3 million cars produced. In this generation, the Corolla was designed with front-wheel drive, except for the AE85 and AE86 models of Corolla Levin/Sprinter Trueno (SR-5/GT-S in the US) which continued to use rear-wheel drive.
The Toyota Corolla mainly comes in two versions: the 3-door and 5-door sedan and hatchback models. Depending on the market, the car will have its own designation. In the United States, for example, in collaboration with General Motors, improved versions of the AE82 sedan model were sold under a completely different name, Chevrolet Nova.
Now, let’s take a closer look at Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu’s 1985 Toyota Corolla II GL. This car stands out with its Miami blue exterior color. The front of the car features classic round headlights, although it is likely that these details have been modified. The front bumper of the 1985 Toyota Corolla II GL is unique, protruded, and square, creating a distinctive and rugged look for this version.
The 1985 Toyota Corolla II GL owned by Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu has also been upgraded with a new set of wheels. At the rear, the car is equipped with a sporty spoiler.
Inside the cabin, the 1985 Toyota Corolla II GL features a modified RASTP steering wheel measuring 13 inches in diameter. Additionally, the owner has customized the cigarette pack holder and coffee holder for this classic car. The screen remains original to the car. The seating system comes in two colors, beige and gray leather. With its 3-door hatchback design, the rear seat space is spacious enough to accommodate three adults comfortably.
As for the powertrain, different power options were available for the 5th generation Toyota Corolla, depending on the market. In Japan, for example, the 2A 1.3-liter engine was replaced by a more modern 2E 12-valve engine, along with an upgraded version released in May 1985.

Soviet Minister’s Car Shines Bright After Rebirth
Over time, especially since the country opened up in the 1990s, Soviet cars have gradually disappeared to be replaced by Japanese, American, and European cars. Many Volga, Lada, and UAZ cars were liquidated from state agencies and transferred to civilian registration, but they did not exist for long before a wave of both imported and assembled cars flooded the streets. Soviet cars slowly drifted away and became a nostalgic reminder of a generation that has gone through two wars.
