On January 13, 2024, Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited the VinFast Electric Car and Electric Motorcycle Manufacturing Complex in Haiphong, Vietnam during his state visit to the country. During the visit, President Joko Widodo had the opportunity to experience the high-end electric car models produced by VinFast, a Vietnamese brand.
Prior to his visit to the manufacturing complex, President Joko Widodo and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting in Hanoi with businesses from both countries that are collaborating on production and business activities. Among the companies present were VinFast and GSM.
The Chairman of Vingroup and Global CEO of VinFast, Pham Nhat Vuong, personally drove President Joko Widodo to visit the electric car production factory at VinFast’s world-class modern manufacturing complex.
After touring the factory and learning about the VinFast electric car models, President Widodo expressed his delight in visiting the facility and was impressed by the quality and sophistication of the vehicles. He also mentioned that he would facilitate the necessary investment procedures for VinFast to establish production and business operations in the Indonesian market.
As part of its long-term plan, VinFast is expected to invest a minimum of 1.2 billion USD in Indonesia. In the initial stages, VinFast will distribute imported cars from Vietnam, and it will also invest 200 million USD to build an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Indonesia, with an estimated annual output of 30,000 to 50,000 cars.
In addition to the visit to VinFast’s manufacturing complex, President Joko Widodo and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with businesses that have investments and operations in both Indonesia and Vietnam. VinFast and GSM reported to the leaders about their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk, a leading technology company in Indonesia that owns the Gojek transport service application platform.
The collaboration between the three companies aims to promote green transportation in Indonesia by supporting Gojek drivers in transitioning to electric vehicles and providing Indonesian consumers with the opportunity to experience VinFast’s environmentally-friendly electric cars through the 5-star Green SM mobility service. In addition to VinFast, GSM also has plans to invest up to 900 million USD in Indonesia in the near future.
Through the signing of the MoU with Gojek, VinFast and GSM demonstrate their strong commitment to contributing to the Indonesian government’s goal of reducing transportation emissions. This agreement also signifies a new milestone for VinFast and GSM as they expand their operations to the international market in 2024.
