Due to the economic downturn, the car market in Vietnam saw a decline in 2023. However, the SUV segment remained resilient, with some popular models emerging as the top choices. Here, we present to you the 5 best-selling SUVs in Vietnam in 2023.

Mazda CX-5

In 2023, Vietnamese consumers purchased a total of 16,808 units of the Mazda CX-5, marking a 32.3% increase from the previous year despite the economic challenges. With these impressive sales figures, the Mazda CX-5 claimed the top spot as the best-selling SUV in Vietnam in 2023, surpassing the Toyota Corolla Cross, which held the title in 2022.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 has become synonymous with the SUV segment in Vietnam, thanks to its affordable price for a Japanese C-segment SUV. In July 2023, the Mazda CX-5 received significant upgrades at a starting price of only 749 million VND. This makes it one of the most competitively priced C-segment SUVs in the Vietnamese market. Currently, the selling price of the Mazda CX-5 ranges from 759 to 999 million VND, offering excellent value for money.

Aside from its attractive price, the Mazda CX-5 stands out with its appealing exterior design, which resonates with Vietnamese consumers. It also boasts convenient and safety features that rival its competitors. Being assembled locally, the Mazda CX-5 benefited from a 50% reduction in registration fees in the second half of 2023, further adding to its appeal.

Kia Sonet

The second best-selling SUV in Vietnam in 2023 is the Kia Sonet, with a total of 11,366 units sold. This represents a 20.3% growth compared to the previous year, despite the market challenges. Despite facing a slowdown in the overall market, this A-segment SUV achieved positive growth and outperformed its competitors.

Kia Sonet

The Kia Sonet emerged as the leading A-segment SUV, surpassing rivals such as the Toyota Raize and Hyundai Venue. Furthermore, it secured a spot in the top 10 best-selling cars across all segments, ranking 6th. The Sonet also became the best-selling Kia model in the Vietnamese market last year.

Korean cars have gained popularity in Vietnam due to their youthful and fashionable design, extensive features, and competitive prices. The Kia Sonet perfectly exemplifies these attractive factors.

With prices ranging from 519 to 574 million VND for its 3 variants, the Kia Sonet offers features such as automatic LED headlights, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support, automatic climate control with rear-seat vents, a sunroof, wireless phone charging, and a 6-speaker audio system.

For first-time buyers or those on a limited budget, the Kia Sonet stands as one of the most compelling choices in the market.

Hyundai Creta

The Hyundai Creta, not only the best-selling SUV in its segment, but also one of the most popular SUVs in the market in 2023, with a total of 10,719 units sold. However, unlike the Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sonet, the Hyundai Creta experienced an 11.3% decline in sales compared to the previous year.

Hyundai Creta

Despite the decrease in sales, the Hyundai Creta managed to surpass the Toyota Corolla Cross by a slight margin of 234 units. Furthermore, it stood as the second best-selling Hyundai model in Vietnam, following the Accent.

Similar to the Kia Sonet, the Hyundai Creta showcases the strengths of Korean cars. Apart from its competitive price, ranging from 640 to 740 million VND, this B-segment SUV benefits from a 50% reduction in registration fees as it is domestically manufactured and assembled.

The Hyundai Creta features full LED lighting, 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels with a two-tone design, leather seats, a digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a premium Bose audio system, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, and a SmartSense active safety system offering functions like automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.

Toyota Corolla Cross

In 2022, the Toyota Corolla Cross emerged as the best-selling SUV in the Vietnamese market, with an impressive sales figure of 21,473 units. In the first half of 2023, this B-segment SUV performed well with a total of 6,341 units sold. However, in the second half of the year, the Toyota Corolla Cross experienced a steady decline in sales, consistently trailing behind its Korean competitors, the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta.

Toyota Corolla Cross

By the end of 2023, the Toyota Corolla Cross recorded a total sales figure of 10,485 units, marking a significant 51.1% decrease compared to 2022. Not only did it lose its title as the best-selling SUV to the Mazda CX-5, but it also relinquished its leading position in the B-segment SUV to the Hyundai Creta.

As a fully imported model from Thailand, the Toyota Corolla Cross does not enjoy the 50% reduction in registration fees that domestically manufactured vehicles receive, unlike many of its competitors in the same segment. Furthermore, the introduction of the Toyota Yaris Cross at a lower price point has further added pressure on the Corolla Cross.

Currently, the Toyota Corolla Cross is priced between 760 and 955 million VND. Compared to its B-segment SUV rivals, this model carries a relatively higher price tag, which may be one of the factors contributing to its declining appeal amidst challenging economic conditions.

Ford Everest

By the end of 2023, the Ford Everest achieved impressive sales of 9,960 units, reflecting a substantial 42.7% increase compared to the previous year. Despite the economic challenges and the absence of the 50% registration fee reduction, this American D-segment SUV delivered exceptional performance in the market.

Ford Everest

The Ford Everest emerged as the best-selling D-segment SUV and secured the 5th spot among all SUVs. Within the Ford lineup, it stands as the second best-selling model after the Ranger.

The success of the Ford Everest is particularly noteworthy because it is not considered a budget-friendly option, with prices ranging from 1,099 to 1,499 billion VND. Although the car was subject to official promotions, the discounts were relatively modest compared to many other models available in the market.

The Ford Everest stands out with its modern, rugged yet fashionable design. It offers a spacious 7-seater interior and a comprehensive suite of convenience and safety features.
