The list of the 10 slowest-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023 is dominated by familiar names but still holds some surprises, according to the sales report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and TC Motor. What stands out is that out of the 10 models, 9 are from Japanese brands, with the remaining spot taken by an American car, all of which are fully imported.

Topping the list is the Honda Civic Type R, with only 19 units sold throughout the year. However, this low sales figure is not due to lack of demand, but rather because the Honda Civic Type R is a high-performance sports car that is fully imported from Japan and sold in limited quantities, only to those who placed pre-orders.

In addition to the Honda Civic Type R, the Toyota Alphard and Land Cruiser Prado also made the list, both of which are not intended for everyday consumers. The Toyota Alphard, priced at over 4 billion VND, targets customers such as businesses, hotels, and resorts that require a vehicle for transporting VIPs.

At the 2nd spot is the Suzuki Ciaz, with a total of 37 units sold. This model ranks at the bottom of the B-segment sedan and despite frequent discounts, it still couldn’t escape the list of slow-selling cars.

Another Suzuki product that made it to the list is the Swift, ranking 10th with 401 units sold. However, the Swift is not the slowest-selling car in the B-segment hatchback category, as that title goes to the Toyota Yaris, which sits at 5th place on the list with a total of 134 units sold.

Joining the Alphard, Land Cruiser Prado, and Yaris on the list is the Hilux, another Toyota model. This pickup truck made its return to Vietnam in late March 2023 but consistently had the lowest sales figure in its segment due to its high price without matching features, even falling behind the standard version of the Ford Ranger.

Ranking at the 2nd and 8th positions are the Honda Accord and Isuzu mu-X. These are also two familiar names that frequently appear on the list of slow-selling cars in Vietnam. The Honda Accord sells slowly due to its high price and limited variants, while the Isuzu mu-X is less attractive to customers due to its niche design.

Notably, the Ford Explorer made it to the list of the 10 slowest-selling cars in Vietnam in 2023 for the first time. Apart from the economic downturn as a contributing factor, the presence of the Hyundai Palisade with its dominant price range in the E-SUV segment, ranging from 1.469-1.589 billion VND, has also affected the sales of the Explorer.
