The driver claimed that his accelerator got stuck, causing the Porsche 918 Spyder to collide with a stationary Volkswagen at a red light.
Over the weekend, a Porsche 918 Spyder was involved in a serious accident in New York City, USA. Images of the aftermath quickly spread on social media, causing a buzz.
According to reports, the accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Richmond Avenue near Hunter Avenue on Staten Island. The Porsche 918 Spyder was approaching a red light at a speed of about 57 km/h and was trying to slow down. However, the brakes of the vehicle seemed to be malfunctioning.
One of the passengers in the car added that the driver had tried to brake as hard as possible, but the Porsche 918 Spyder couldn’t come to a stop. To avoid hitting other vehicles stopped at the red light, the driver steered onto the side of the road, causing the car to collide with a bus stop sign.
However, the driver of the Porsche 918 Spyder gave a different statement to the police. According to the driver, the car’s accelerator pedal got stuck, causing the Porsche 918 Spyder to collide with a stationary Volkswagen at a red light. The impact was strong, causing severe damage to the front of the car, deforming the front bumper. Even the front passenger-side wheel, which was made of magnesium alloy by BBS, broke off from the front axle. Meanwhile, the rear of the car seemed to be undamaged. Luckily, no injuries were reported in the accident.
The Porsche 918 Spyder made its global debut in 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. With a limited production run of 918 units worldwide, this hypercar quickly sold out by December 2014 and ended production in June 2015.
The Porsche 918 Spyder is equipped with a 4.6L naturally aspirated V8 engine combined with two electric motors, resulting in a total power output of 886 horsepower and 1,245 Nm of torque. Thanks to this power, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 340 km/h.
Powering the two electric motors is a 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This battery pack can be fully charged in about 30 minutes with a dedicated charging station and about two hours when using household electricity. In pure electric mode (without using the combustion engine), the 918 Spyder has a range of about 30 km at a maximum speed of 150 km/h.
