The owner of Lamborghini, Stephen Winkelmann, has revealed that the future battery-powered cars from the brand will not only deliver superior performance but also be designed to maximize the emotional appeal, just like the brand’s electric cars.
The Italian carmaker will make its first foray into the world of electric cars in 2028 with the commercial version of the Lanzador GT crossover and then expand into the world of electric supercars. In a recent interview with Autocar, Winkelmann noted that the company’s engineers are working on various types of electric vehicles and while it is important that the car’s performance needs to be strong, there will also be a lot of materials.
“The reality of the numbers is important,” he told the publication. “In terms of output, we are talking about at least one megawatt (about 1,341 horsepower). This is for sure. This is one of the performance pillars in the future when it comes to electric usage. But much more important than the facts and figures for Lamborghini are the feeling you get when you sit in the car.”
“Performance is divided into two,” Winkelmann continued. “One part is acceleration, top speed, lap time, and braking ability but this has to be transferred into the emotional aspect and every Lamborghini driver confirms that there is this feeling of a Lamborghini – and this has to be transferred into the aspect of a car.”
Winkelmann further stated that he is pushing the company’s engineers to develop electric cars that combine “continuous acceleration capability” with “maximum speed and range,” describing the efforts to achieve all three as “almost an impossible mission.”
There is a lot to look forward to as Lamborghini focuses on electric vehicles. The successor to the Huracan is coming soon and we know that the brand will drop the naturally aspirated V10 engine of the current model to replace it with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine supplemented by a hybrid system, similar to the setup of the Revuelto. A plug-in hybrid version of the Urus is also in Lamborghini’s plans.
