As planned, the joint venture between Sony and Honda will introduce three electric vehicle models by the end of this decade.

Specifically, in 2025, the joint venture will unveil its first electric sedan called AFEELA. According to Sony and Honda, “AFEELA brings unparalleled intelligence, memory, communication, protection, and inspiration to everyone. The electric car is equipped with an ultra-wide display control panel and futuristic digital interior. Technological elements are being developed in collaboration with Microsoft to run Azure Open AI as a “personal conversational assistant.”

Next, around 2028, the joint venture will release a “affordable” compact SUV. The SUV is expected to be more spacious than the sedan and offer more entertainment options such as a surround sound system and display screen.

Finally, the joint venture plans to introduce a small-sized car with dimensions equivalent to the Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Golf. It is expected to share components with Honda’s independently developed electric car. The retail price will be kept low by eliminating equipment and features.

Sony-Honda Joint Venture intends to enhance development structure, recruit additional personnel to expand production and develop vehicles.

It is expected that all three new models will be developed based on a common platform to reduce costs and accelerate development. All three joint venture models are positioned to compete with a range of products from electric car giant Tesla.

In the future, the demand for electric vehicles will remain high. Research agencies predict that electric car sales will increase to about 24.54 million units in 2027, accounting for 25% of total new car sales, and reach 36.37 million units in 2030, when they will account for 36% of total new car sales.

Therefore, this is still an attractive market for car manufacturers to aim for.

In addition to developing affordable models, the Sony-Honda joint venture will research and integrate various games into their vehicles. They will also utilize advanced computer graphics technology from Epic Games (United States), a company that has a joint venture with Sony Corporation.
