In late December 2023, Ford issued a recall notice to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States for the recall of two vehicle models, the EcoSport and Focus, due to brake failure risks.

Specifically, this recall affects approximately 26,041 EcoSport vehicles produced from 2015 to 2018. Additionally, 113,689 Ford Focus vehicles produced between 2018 and 2022 are also included.

According to the NHTSA, the transmission belt in these vehicle models may break after prolonged usage, causing the timing belt or serpentine belt to slip off the pulley, resulting in a loss of oil pressure to the pump system. This can render the entire vehicle system inoperable and also lead to a loss of brake assist.

A representative from Ford stated that from 2016 until now, the car manufacturer has received nearly 2,100 warranty claims related to the transmission belt. Furthermore, there has been at least one accident resulting in two injuries believed to be caused by a loss of brake assist, possibly due to the effect of the transmission belt.

Ford and Lincoln dealerships will proceed with replacing and repairing the affected vehicles as soon as sufficient parts become available.

In the U.S. market, Ford has consistently been at the forefront of vehicle recalls for three consecutive years. As of the end of 2023, Ford has issued 54 recall notices, affecting over 5 million of the company’s vehicle models nationwide. This figure is significantly higher compared to other car manufacturers such as Kia (20 recalls, 3 million vehicles), BMW (29 recalls, nearly 333,000 vehicles), or Nissan (22 recalls, over 1.8 million affected vehicles).

In Vietnam, the Ford Fiesta and Focus were once prominent models in the small urban car and compact sedan segments. However, both models are no longer being sold. The Ford Ranger and Ford Everest are currently the two most notable models from the American carmaker in Vietnam.
