According to Carscoops, Mazda has officially confirmed that it will stop producing Mazda6 in the Japanese market from mid-April this year. This move by Mazda follows a series of events related to the future of the D-segment sedan, as Mazda6 had already been discontinued in North America and the United Kingdom in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
Mazda6 was first introduced to the market in 2002 with the first generation known as Atenza in the Japanese market. The third generation of Mazda6 has also existed for over a decade in the global automotive market since its debut in 2012.
Kazuyoshi Todo, Mazda’s domestic sales leader, stated that this D-segment sedan embodies the full values of the brand’s DNA.
“The Atenza and Mazda6 have been well-loved by customers for a long period of time, with a total of 226,437 units sold in Japan since its official launch,” reflected Kazuyoshi Todo.
He also confirmed that the possible replacement for Mazda6 would be crossover models from the CX lineup. Currently, Mazda is believed to be focusing more on producing high-riding vehicles.

According to Carscoops, high-riding vehicles such as SUVs and crossovers are the force to be reckoned with in the global automotive industry. These models are highly favored by consumers and also generate more profits for car manufacturers due to their higher prices.
It is noted that Japanese customers will still be able to purchase Mazda6 even though the sedan’s production line will cease operation from April.
At present, Mazda has not confirmed the name of the successor to Mazda6. However, according to many sources, a rear-wheel drive sedan is being developed by the Japanese automaker, using a platform similar to Mazda’s larger SUV models.
