The latest report from the General Department of Customs shows that in the first half of January, completely imported cars into Vietnam reached 1,053 units with a total value of over 39 million USD.
Among them, passenger cars with 9 seats or less are still the main imported car group with a total of 591 units docked in the first half of January, with a total value of nearly 18 million USD. Imported transport cars in this period numbered 69 units, while the remaining are cars with more than 9 seats.
In the first report of 2024, the number of completely imported cars into Vietnam has significantly decreased. Compared to a total of 4,232 imported cars recorded in the second half of December 2023, this category has decreased by more than 75% in terms of quantity and nearly 56% in terms of value.
In the past three months, the number of imported cars reached approximately 1,000 units in the first half of January, which is also the lowest recorded number of cars docking in Vietnam.

It is likely that the relatively low sales volume of the Vietnamese automobile market in 2023 is the reason for the decrease in car imports in the first half of January.
According to the report of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), in 2023, the sales volume of imported cars in the Vietnamese market reached 120,609 units, a 32% decrease compared to the figures of 2022. The sales volume of locally assembled cars in this period also reached 181,380 units, a 20% decrease compared to the previous year.
In the list of the top 10 best-selling cars in the Vietnamese market, only the Ford Everest and Toyota Corolla Cross are completely imported cars from foreign countries.
The Mitsubishi Xpander and Ford Ranger are models that have both locally assembled and completely imported versions, while the other 6 models in the aforementioned list are domestic assembled cars.
Last year, the Mitsubishi Xpander was the best-selling car in Vietnam with a sales volume of 19,740 units. Out of this number, 17,838 Xpander cars were completely imported from Indonesia by Mitsubishi, while only 1,902 Xpander cars sold in Vietnam last year originated from domestic production lines.
