The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall notice indicates that the passenger airbag module may not be properly attached to the lower surface of the dashboard due to the dashboard’s plastic component not meeting the specified requirements. As a result, the airbag deployment capability may be compromised and pieces of the dashboard may detach during a collision, increasing the risk of injury. The recall affects 5 BMW X5 sDrive40i and X5 xDrive40i 2024 models.

BMW became aware of the potential issue on January 27, 2024, when a supplier discovered that the dashboard did not meet quality standards. The plastic component used to manufacture the panel was then tested and found to not meet quality standards. A stop order was issued at a production location in February, and BMW promptly decided to voluntarily recall the vehicles for safety reasons. The automaker has received no customer complaints, inquiries, or warranty claims related to this issue, and is unaware of any incidents or injuries caused by this issue.

Owners of the 8 BMW X5 and X7 models will be notified of the recall on April 16. Dealerships are required to replace the dashboard free of charge.
