According to Motor1, General Motors is reconsidering its views on hybrid technology in cars. The leading American automaker is contemplating changing its product strategy to include plug-in hybrid vehicles in its carbon-neutral process.

In 2018, Mark Reuss, the CEO of General Motors, announced that the company would no longer invest in hybrid vehicles and instead focus on pure electric vehicles.

Three years later, Mark Reuss reiterated in his interview with The Washington Post that General Motors would not participate in the development of hybrid or plug-in hybrid cars and would directly move towards producing and selling fully electric vehicles to customers.

However, things seem to have changed significantly since then, leading General Motors to reconsider its market approach.

Although Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors, has not revealed detailed plans, she has indicated that plug-in hybrid technology will be applied to some of General Motors’ vehicle models in the North American market. This decision is likely driven by stricter fuel consumption regulations for cars in the United States.

During the year-end meeting, Mary Barra assured shareholders that General Motors still aims to eliminate emissions from cars by 2035. However, this strategy will temporarily involve the presence of plug-in hybrid technology in specific segments.

During the meeting, Mary Barra also emphasized the environmental benefits of this technology, highlighting the contributions of plug-in hybrid vehicles in reducing emissions alongside the continuous development of charging infrastructure in the United States.

Currently, the only hybrid vehicle in General Motors’ product lineup in the U.S. is the Chevrolet Corvette sports car. The Chevrolet Volt, the company’s previous plug-in hybrid car, ceased production in 2019 and remains the last plug-in hybrid model from the American automaker.

In the electric vehicle segment, General Motors had to halt sales of the Chevy Blazer EV in December last year due to software issues. At that time, General Motors had just started delivering the pure electric SUV to its first customers in the United States.

Toyota is one of the traditional automakers that does not solely focus on electric vehicles. The Japanese automaker claims to have a multi-modal approach in developing various types of vehicles, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, pure electric, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs).

Depending on the market and specific social conditions, Toyota will make appropriate product choices.
