Established in 2021, Zeekr is a premium electric car brand owned by Geely Automobile Holdings. The brand will open a branch in Malaysia after the Smart #1, Pro-Net’s newest energy-efficient car, is officially launched in Malaysia in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The news of the brand’s entry came after the Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz visited Zeekr’s smart factory in Hangzhou Bay, Ningbo, China.

Zafrul toured the facilities and held discussions with Geely and Proton on NEV (New Energy Vehicle) strategies and intelligent technology, test driving NEV products such as passenger cars, SUVs, pickups, and commercial vehicles.

The event witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between DRB-Hicom and Geely, demonstrating their commitment to jointly invest, manage, and develop the Tanjung Malim Auto High-Tech Valley (AHTV) into a smart city and center for next-generation vehicles (NxGV).

Zeekr 001 shares design features with Lynk & Co 01.

Proton Chairman Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar said: “We recognize the importance of Malaysia becoming a regional hub for NxGV products, therefore Proton, as the national brand, will play an active role in contributing significantly to the nation’s goals.”

From the start, Proton has established a permanent representative office at the Geely Research Institute (GRI) in Hangzhou Bay to facilitate seamless development between engineering groups.

In an effort to expedite the technology transfer process, Proton has designated 18 engineers to work at the office in Hangzhou Bay in the initial stage of R&D and NEV development programs, with the intention of assigning more engineers.
