Mazda has just officially launched the CX-80, the new top-of-the-line SUV from the Japanese automaker in markets such as Europe, Japan and Australia. The new SUV is offered in a variety of three-row seating configurations and will initially be available with mild-hybrid diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrain options in Europe.
As expected, the Mazda CX-80 shares many of its exterior design cues with the CX-60, including the entire front end. However, the CX-80 has a longer wheelbase and extended rear overhang, making it more similar in size to the CX-70 and CX-90 in North America.
The Mazda CX-80’s exterior is distinguished by its longer rear doors. In addition, the rear side windows are surrounded by thick chrome trim, a unique feature of the CX-80.
Around the rear of the vehicle, the CX-80 features taillights similar to the CX-60 but has a redesigned rear bumper and a more upright tailgate.
The new Mazda CX-80 measures nearly 5,000 mm in length, with a wheelbase of over 3,000 mm, larger than the CX-60’s 4,745 mm length and 2,870 mm wheelbase.
For comparison, the CX-70 and CX-90 SUVs in North America measure 5,121 mm in length and have a wheelbase of 3,119 mm. Notably, the CX-70 and CX-90 are classified as wide-body SUVs, unlike the CX-60 and CX-80, which are narrow-body SUVs.
The CX-80 is available in a variety of three-row interior configurations, with seating for either six or seven occupants. The second row can either be a three-person bench seat or two individual seats, with the option of a center console or a walk-through to the third row.Â
The dashboard design is similar to the CX-60, featuring high-quality materials and Mazda’s latest infotainment screen. Convenience features include Alexa voice control, navigation, and a new Trailer Hitch View system. The vehicle is equipped with a full suite of i-Activsense ADAS, with Mazda targeting a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
Finally, the third row’s two seats can be folded down completely flat, allowing for easy storage of luggage and cargo.
In Europe, the CX-80 is offered with mild-hybrid diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. These powertrains are shared with the CX-60, as both vehicles are based on the same platform architecture.
The base e-Skyactiv D variant features a 3.3L inline-six diesel engine that produces 251 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. The engine is assisted by Mazda’s 48V M Hybrid Boost mild-hybrid system. Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The more powerful and fuel-efficient e-Skyactiv PHEV variant produces a combined output of 323 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. This powertrain consists of a 2.5L inline-four gasoline engine and an electric motor, along with a 17.8 kWh battery pack that provides an all-electric driving range of up to 60 km.
Pricing for the Mazda CX-80 has not yet been announced.
